The chores that jump on you on a Saturday morning are just unkind. How is it that you have to wash, lean, mop, weed (the grass ), and have phatic communion with the neighbours, all in one day? Well, not all in one day, ‘Saturday’ actually ends by noon . Once the sun is up, the rest of the day feels like a blob of half-melted fat. Read the rest of this entry »

I woke up this morning typing another article entirely, and I heard a child singing what was a song we regularly sang in the children’s Bible club. The lyrics of the song are “In the Morning/early in the morning/in the morning…I will rise and praise the Lord”. I smiled, because it brought back an avalanche of memories in that four or five second period, when I joined in the song muttering the lyrics to myself, I noticed that what the child was singing went thus: “In the morning/early in the morning/in the morning…I will never praise the Lord”. It was mildly amusing but also threw my mind in another direction.
An incident happened about four years ago, which I’m certain I’d never forget. I was singing a song “You are more than life to me /O Lord my God”, and a very dear friend, ‘Rowy Omoyibo said (I can’t remember his words exactly) “but that sing doesn’t reflect in your actions, the way you lead your life shows that the world is more important than God to you”. But I remember somewhere in that heavenly inspired reprimand was ‘YOU MEAN AM’? Read the rest of this entry »
Eba is one of the greatest meals in the committee of meals in Nigeria, second only to Jollof Rice and dodo, but it was very amusing when I found that a professor I greatly admire talked briefly about his travails with different manifestations of Eba that litter the Nigerian Landscape in His inaugural lecture talked; while some are made with a lot of water such that it turns out pudding-esque, in other parts (and that’s where I’m from)it has less moisture and that’s probably to allow ‘proper’ molding of the Eba before it ‘attacks’ the soup.
Now, one of the worst experiences a human can have is to have to eat Eba that wasn’t properly covered during the harmattan season. Matter of fact, people would rather go hungry than allow themselves that degree of torture! Because, it gets so hard, it’ll hurt with every swallow. Read the rest of this entry »
I enjoy football (soccer); I love football! I follow up on football news, I laugh when ‘rival’ teams loose, or have some sort of crisis, I cringe when it seems that they are building some winning momentum. I remember seeing a football match at a ‘viewing centre’; it was a special day. The club I have the fondest support for had just bought a teenager for what seemed like a ridiculously high price, and so he came in midway in the second half. He was obviously underestimated by the opposing team, so he got a pass, skipped past two (or was it three) players, and bent the ball past the goal keeper!!! The whole place went crazy! I was hugging people I’d never met, high-fiving total strangers, screaming and jumping in that frenzy! Shouts of ‘na so’! ‘we dey ball’ ‘Catch am na!’ ‘pikin wey sabi’! ‘una go walk alone tire!’ filled the air! Obviously supporters of the other team sat dour-faced, it made me all the more ecstatic, I loved it! Read the rest of this entry »
I was once in a choir, maybe I’d be in one again :), but then I felt like it was a torture session, not for me, but for the choir director and the other choristers. I was perpetually singing off the key, and off the part I was supposed to sing. I remember it was so bad I was allowed a free-role; that is, I could sing whatever I wanted, only I wasn’t going to do it with the microphone. Read the rest of this entry »
In the part of the world where I live, power supply is unstable. The electric power companies supply electricity for an abysmal average of five hours a day, sometimes there’ll be no power supply for two or more days. The paradox is that one of my most treasured properties is my phone. Read the rest of this entry »
For most people, religious or not, the notion of one night stands are very offensive, even the ‘seemingly’ loose and sexually promiscuous of humans find one night stands to be repulsive at some point.
“One night stands” refer in a broad sense to a sexual encounter with a stranger, no names, no emotions, just the perverse desire to satisfy sexual desires with just anyone; its basically a single sexual encounter without any expectation of further relations between the participants.
Not so nice right? Read the rest of this entry »
