In this era, there has certainly been a re-definition of a lot of terms. Marriage is now a ‘contract’, and lying has now been categorized; we have white lies, necessary lies, ‘I didn’t have a choice’ lies, and the list goes on.
Then there is the magic phrase “I DIDN’T DO IT”. So it’s fine if I lick the chicken sauce without really eating the chicken right? I mean after all I didn’t eat the chicken! Did i? You can’t say I was swimming if all I did was jump in the pool and jump back out; I didn’t do it!
Does the ‘’as long as I didn’t do it’’ stand as your strongest point? Is that what helps you sleep at night? Is it ok to kiss, smooch, touch each others genitalia (private parts), and maybe add some ‘sexting’ to it (sexting is the practice of sending sexually suggestive messages, over an electronic device. With Instant messaging it has become alarmingly prevalent) and still say you ‘’didn’t do it’? So let’s assume you didn’t do ‘it’, what was it that you were doing? ‘That’?
Being chaste is being ‘pure’. A pure substance is ‘whole’…when people talk of pure gold what they mean is that all of it is gold; there is no other substance that is not ‘gold’ in the gold.
As Christians our standard is ‘The Word of God’, not an entertainment magazine or blog, or a ‘’keeping-up-with-the-world-gospel’’…the ever living never outdated Word of God is the standard, and in that ‘standard’ the ‘I did everything else, but I didn’t do it’ argument doesn’t hold water.
Amongst all the bible ‘Heroes’ Joseph stands tall, His story is unique and quite similar to what we might experience today, I mean the setting and the build up to what I like to call the ‘great temptation’.
Gen 39:6 says ‘’…now joseph was handsome in form and appearance.’’ That means he wasn’t just handsome, his form was ‘handsome’ too! In ancient Egypt that must have meant a lot! Joseph must been ‘burnt’ abs and all. Joseph was your alpha male…straight up hunk. Joseph had the goods, he wasn’t just a brilliant whiz with good organizing skills, and he had the looks and ‘form’ to match it! If his masters wife ‘wanted’ him can you even begin to imagine the pressure he must have faced from his fellow servants and other ‘common’ citizens? But in Gen 39:8 it says ‘’but he refused’’.
He could have gotten any girl he wanted, and he would have been justified in some manner. Considering that He did nothing to deserve the circumstances he found himself in. There was no parent, or sibling, or anyone who had the fear of God around him, and here he was, stuck in the ‘dream’ situation of many folks. She was the wife of a big-shot, she would be the equivalent of a beauty queen or even more in our era; she would have been a magazine cover girl, physically magnificent and definitely looking pleasurable, yet Joseph refused!
She literarily grabbed him, he was almost locked in her seductive grasp, but he refused, he did not just say NO, he backed it up by doing the running!
Is it possible for you to just try and refuse…..once?
You can’t perform sexual acts and still claim to be chaste! You can’t read sex-themed blogs or magazines and claim to be chaste.
‘Sex is everywhere’ that’s the argument most people use to defend their submission to the earthquake of sex. If a bird flies over your head, that wont be much of a problem, and it wont even be much of your fault; but if the bird builds a nest on your head, lays eggs and the eggs hatch, it would be hard at that point for you to blame the innocent old woman in your village for your ‘fall’. I’m sure that there are cockroaches in most of our houses, lots of them maybe…it doesn’t mean that you’ll go looking for them. They’ll probably be good for a spicy ‘roach sandwich’, but how come we don’t say ‘‘the cockroaches were just sooo much I had to eat them’’
Refuse to watch or read porn, refuse to do other things that are related to ‘it’ the bible says we should flee all appearances of sin. 1 Thess 5:22 ‘Abstain from all appearance of evil’
Jesus took it a notch higher when he said ‘’But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.’’ ( Matt 5:28-29). Then all they could do was look; now we can read, watch, chat with, download, stream, share,…it goes on and on. What we can do fueled by lust these days is almost unbelievable, see why ‘touching’ is doing it even more?
The statement made by Jesus doesn’t really make the idea of ‘purity’ sound hard, but He was trying to teach us that what happens on the inside is as grave as, and perhaps even more than what happens on the ‘outside’, because once lust is conceived in the heart, the chances that it will manifest physically are very high. Sexual sin (in all its forms) is just a fruit. Jesus knew this, so He dealt with the location where it takes root. That should be where we judge our ‘chastity’, because some of us are experts at being clad in nice suits and extremely long skirts and some outrageously heavy bibles, and yet our minds are a crimson soup of immoral thoughts, which we have allowed to take root and which we delight in recollecting from time to time.
Anyway, God being omniscient has known that a time like this will come and so He has asked us to come and get our minds washed and transformed; Isa 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.’’ Rom 12:2 ‘’ and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…’’
Being chaste completely is something we should desire and work towards. However, we should remember that it is God that works in us, to will and to do (Phil 2:13).
Being chaste is not just ‘’not doing it’’, it is refusing to think ‘it’, refusing to read ‘it’, refusing to watch ‘it’, and refusing it, but don’t just talk, back it up by bolting out of the scene!
The beautiful thing about this is that God has made more than enough power available to live above sexual sin, and any other kind of sin. He works behind the scenes to strengthen us he is constantly working to see that we turn out right; this is just what the grace of God is about.
1 Cor 15:9-10 ‘’But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I , but the grace of God which was with me’’.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
God does not condemn us, He has loved us, He still loves us even more each day, but he wants us to enjoy abundant life. Living in sin, or in the hypocrisy of ‘I did all of that but I didn’t do it’ robs us of that chance. Those things are works of the flesh, and the God pleads with us to walk in the spirit and we will not fulfill the imprisoning lusts of the flesh. This act of ‘licking the chicken sauce and not eating the chicken’ is just deceitful.
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
The most common reason why people can’t quit these fleshly prisons of lust is because they think they cant, they believe that God wont want them anymore, they feel like they are walking down ‘no return street’, but that is not true! We are free! Masturbation, sexting, pornography, fornication, lying, hate, and other ‘prisons’; they can’t hold us anymore! Jesus said IT IS FINISHED! We are free.
Yes Jesus did something for us! He set us free from the evils of the deceit of ‘I didn’t do it’!
Get out of the box of deceit today!
